What students say

I’d rather you heard this from them than from me. These are unedited, in the students’ own words.

“I was a shower singer who wanted to take it to the next level.”

To put it simply, Dr. Mentzel changed my life.

I walked into his studio having never received a vocal lesson, never went to school for music, or had any professional back ground in the music world. I was a shower singer who wanted to take it to the next level. I came in, told him I was getting into vocal jazz and wanted to see what getting a coach would do. Well, it took my singing from decent, to incredible, and he will do the same for you.

His approach is relatively unorthodox compared to “academic” vocal training, it is much more efficient and logical. He keeps it simple, let the body do what it does best, if you can speak, you can sing. The body knows how to do it, he just shows you how to LET your body sing.

Since beginning my training with him, my range, tone, resonance and accuracy have improved innumerably. I could not recommended him enough, and I truly believe that he is one of the best vocal coaches in the United States of America.

His top down approach, nearly tricking your body into incredible vocal feats, is an approach I never saw coming. It has been an absolute joy to work with him. His tutelage is financially affordable, and conceptually invaluable. Thanks to him I have a full time music career, with a bright future ahead of me.

“I was 43 when we started, and one of his toughest students.”

I hired Michael to help me learn to sing better, but neither of us could have been prepared for the journey we would go on together. I was 43 years old when we started working together and I was admittedly one of Michael’s toughest students. Not because I wasn’t compliant; I wanted to do everything he asked. My issue was that I had mental blocks that stopped me at every turn.

With Michael’s help, I was able to identify the deep beliefs that kept me stuck and made me repeatedly sabotage my own efforts. In the end, the most important part of my journey was not learning to sing (which I did eventually), but rather uncovering a set of beliefs that prevented me from fully expressing myself musically.

Michael and I haven’t worked together in some time, but the foundation that we laid for my growth continues to this day. I found my singing voice and now — at 60 years old! — I’m finding my instrumental voice, as well. My goal in hiring Michael was to become more adept at singing, but what I discovered was that by committing fully to my initial dream, I found even more dreams ahead of me, just waiting to also be fulfilled.

“I didn’t believe those registers were possible for me.”

I worked with Michael for approximately 3 years, and my voice improved exponentially in the first year thanks to his skillful instruction. I had been singing for as long as I can remember, but I came to our first few lessons not even believing the lower and higher registers he helped me develop were possible for me! Over the course of our instruction, my vocal range noticeably increased, and I noticed a particular increase in my vocal stamina and capacity.

Not only did he teach me about the mechanics of voice and the techniques of vocal performance through classical instruction, but he also helped my teenage self come out of her shell and encouraged me to continue honing my skills in singing and songwriting. Thanks to Michael’s instruction, I have continued to sing and write well into my adulthood.

Not only do I highly recommend him as a vocal coach for anyone, no matter what experience you have with singing, but I can wholeheartedly recommend him to those who are skeptical that improving their singing is even possible. Michael will prove any negative assumptions you had about yourself and your singing wrong, with a personalized and tailored approach to teaching vocal performance.

“I was dealing with crippling stage fright.”

Though I’ve taken voice lessons on and off throughout the years with various instructors, I found Michael Mentzel’s approach to singing to be particularly effective. When I began studying with Michael, I was dealing with crippling stage fright. He taught me concepts that completely changed my approach to singing, some of which weren’t just applicable to my voice, but to my personal growth as an artist.

Thanks to Michael’s guidance, I sing with greater enjoyment and I am far more confident in my vocal abilities. I am incredibly fortunate to have studied with him and I remain forever grateful for his mentorship. I look forward to returning to his studio for a tune-up whenever I need to reconnect with what I’ve learned.

I highly recommend Michael to any voice artist who seeks both technical mastery and meaningful artistic development.

“I had never done any solo singing.”

I began working with Michael many years ago when he taught a course entitled “So You Think You Can’t Sing”. Up until that time I had some experience singing in young boys choir but had never done any solo singing. I had much to learn and a great deal of self imposed issues that needed correcting and confidence that needed building.

“My upper range extended by four half notes.”

I am in my second year of working with Michael as a voice teacher, an incredibly talented and gifted teacher. With patience, he has been able to get my upper range extended by 4 half notes. I cannot recommend Michael highly enough to anyone who is having voice difficulties or would like to improve their singing.

About Michael Mentzel, DMA

I hold a doctorate in vocal pedagogy and teach in the Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences at the University of Maryland, College Park. I’m also a practicing speech-language pathologist, which means I think about the voice as a physical and clinical instrument as well as an artistic one.

As a baritone, I was an IIE Fulbright finalist, a Discovery Series Competition finalist in Washington, D.C., and a semi-finalist at the International Hugo Wolf Academy Competition in Stuttgart. I trained at Indiana University with James McDonald and studied German Lied with the late Leonard Hokanson. I’ve sung opera from the early repertoire through the modern, appeared with Opera Lafayette and the Maryland Opera Studio in Gluck’s Armide, and was cast in West Side Story under Broadway director Joey McKneely. My recording of newly discovered Lieder by Walter Gieseking was released by Centaur Records.

My research on singing pedagogy has been presented at the Art in Motion conference at the Hochschule für Musik in Munich and at the Pan-American Vocology Association.

Recent students have been accepted to the Curtis Institute of Music, the Juilliard School, and the Hochschule für Musik in Hamburg.

None of which matters much on a Tuesday evening when you’re trying to reach a note. But it’s why I teach the way I do.
